I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I downloaded this book. I wasn't familiar with the whole Steampunk genre/subculture, and I thought this book might be just another cocktail book. Not at all!

This book was informative and, surprisingly, really, really funny. I'd have to say this is the funniest cookbook I've ever read. And I read it cover-to-cover in one sitting. The author has an informal writing style that makes this book anything but dry. It just oozes personality. Good job!

Last summer, I actually scoured the Internet looking for a recipe to make cherry-infused alcohol of some sort, since I have the harvest of 3 cherry trees to deal with annually. It was difficult to find good information on this subject in context. I made what I now know is Cherry Cordial, Cherry Bounce, and Cherry Brandy. They made great Christmas gifts, and after reading this book, I finally have some recipes on how to use them.

Highly recommended.

SteamDrunks 101 Steampunk Cocktails and Mixed Drinks eBook ChrisRachael Oseland Vicktoria Riley Reviews

I run a cocktail mixing blog and am always on the hunt for new mixes and drink recipes. This book is full of unique and delicious ones! They're not your every day run of the mill recipes; they're different and include things like eggs, sugar, nutmeg, and my favorite ingredient - TEA. It had never occurred to me before that tea and alcohol could (what am i saying SHOULD) go together. (I'm almost ashamed to say that really) but this book has some fantastic recipes for it. They have punches, milk drinks, egg drinks and more! The author is witty and comical. This book is well written and easy to read. I do wish it had pictures though.
A funny recipe book? Yes! I got it for free, figured what the heck. The title intrigued me. I have a circa 1902 cookbook (really an all-purpose recipe guide) and the recipes included in SteamDrunks are authentic Victorian recipes. But not just dry (pun intended) lists of ingredients...the author does commentary on each one which are laugh out loud funny.

I didn't expect to read a cookbook from cover to cover in a couple of days, but this one is really entertaining.
Content is almost entirely recipes of drinks, all from the Victorian era and many of which are rarely found today. However, there is a reason these drinks are no longer made, specifically that the modern palate would tend not to enjoy them. A bigger problem is that the majority of drinks are punches in sizable portions, again something that made sense in the Victorian era but is less applicable now. Nevertheless, it was fun to learn a bit of history and I did get some ideas for creations that would be loosely based on the recipes in this book.
SteamDrunks is not my usual kind of book...non-fiction, alcohol-centric...but I gave the sample a try, liked what I read and bought the full download. In addition to classic, and when I say classic I mean Victorian age, cocktail recipes there's a lot of humor and history to be found in between the digital covers. One of my favorite lines from a recipe instructs the reader to "shake like you're imagining what lies above a lady's ankles". There are even recipes to make barrel sized quantities of drinks for a thirsty crew. While I only dabble in the steampunk culture, with a few twists and drink name changes these recipes could be pirated (arrr!) for a harder science fiction related party, or any kind of party really.
I ended up reading this cover to cover just out of sheer entertainment. I actually laughed out loud so many times I lost count. Almost each page has something either humorous or deprecating about the drink. The author freely admits that several of these recipes - while period correct - are disgusting and should be skipped. It's worth getting just to have an amusing evening.
I got this for my brother for his birthday. Then I flipped through it. I am now reluctant to wrap it until I have either used it for speed-typing practice so I will have all the recipes on my own computer or bought a second copy.
The recipes largely seem at first glance to be for medium-sized-guest-list parties, but electric calculators (and smartphones) do division. So does an abacus, but that could be a challenging operation to undertake while drunk on tea.
~I don’t partake of the spirits, so a bartender’s handbook really is not something that I need. It’s not always about needing…as much as wanting.
~I found this to be a fun and interesting read. Not everything that one reads has to be an action-adventure…sometimes a little non-fiction information can add greatly to one’s future reading enjoyment. It gave me a glimpse into the Victorian lifestyle. As for an actual drink mixing guide, it looked straight forward and easy enough to follow.
~This is definitely a must for anyone interested in the Steampunk culture, Victorian history, or specialized bartending.
